Great Caribbean Islands - Bonaire

Bonaire, one of the Dutch islands of the Caribbean, is one of the Netherland Antilles islands (and one of the Caribbean's Lesser Antilles). Together with the neighbouring islands of Aruba and Curacao, it makes up the Netherlands Antilles A B C islands. Bonaire is situated to the North of Venezuela and is not considered to be part of the Caribbean Hurricane Belt. As such, it is unlikely to suffer some of the tropical weather systems that affect some of the more Northern islands in the Caribbean. The island has an area of around one hundred and thirteen square miles.

Bonaire derives most of its income from tourism, due in the main to its excellent climate. There is very little rainfall in sunny Bonaire.

The capital of Bonaire is Kralendijk, which can be located on the North West coast of the island. Bonaire's climate makes it popular with tourists all year round, from Europe and the United States and South America.

Bonaire is not renowned for its beaches, although, Pink Beach, Donkey Beach and Atlantis Beach are popular. What Bonaire is most notable for is its magnificent indigent bird life in general and its abundant flamingos in particular.

To make up for the what is undeniably a relative lack of typical Caribbean beaches, Bonaire has a magnificent reef, which makes up the island's Marine Park - a popular tourist attraction and a must for snorkelers and scuba divers. The marine life in the waters of the park is so abundant that Bonaire has unofficially named itself Diver's Paradise. The island also has its own national park - Washington-Slagbaai National Park, which is particularly popular with the walkers and hikers. Windsurfing is another popular pursuit for Bonaire's vacationers.

The local languages are Papamiento (which has strong Dutch and Spanish components, reflecting the island's past) Dutch, and English.

The official currency is the Netherlands Antillean Guilder, although the United States Dollar is accepted virtually everywhere.

The easiest way to travel to Bonaire is by air, to its Flamingo International Airport, which is located at Kralendijk, the island's capital. Scheduled flights are served from the United States and The Netherlands in Europe.

Bonaire is an individual island, which provides much more than simply a Caribbean climate. The flora, fauna and abundant aquatic life represent a real opportunity for nature lovers, wind surfers and, particularly scuba divers and snorkelers. They will all find something to enjoy in beautiful Bonaire.
