Best Caribbean Islands - St Bart's

Located in the Leeward Islands and belonging to the French state, St Bart's, or to give it its correct name, St Barthelemey, has long been known as a playground for the rich and famous from all over the world.

St Bart's is a pretty island, with plenty of greenery. To cross the island involves climbing one or two somewhat challenging ascents, particularly when the roads are wet and the tyres are not gripping well.

St Bart's relies upon tourism for its income and is the preferred location of those who wish to spend their vacation in relative privacy. Although there are a number of chic hotels, most of the tourists who visit the island tend to stay in one of the many private villas that are available for rental, frequently for substantial sums of money.

St Bart's is famous also for its twenty-one beaches, some more private (and inaccessible than others).

The island is also popular with yachtsmen and sailors, with many yachts mooring off one of the beaches for a night in Gustavia, the island's capital, as part of a Caribbean sailing trip.

Although the official currency is the Euro, due to St Bart's being part of the European Union the United States Dollar is pretty well universally accepted.

Travelling around the island is possible either through renting a car or using one of the multitude of taxis. Of course, you can also sail around the island if you are vacationing on board a vessel.

The cuisine and ambience in St Bart's is typically French and cordon bleu food is the order of the day there.!

Travelling to St Bart's is possible by boat, by air, into its small airport or, the most straightforward way, by a short ferry ride from Marigot (the island capital) or Oyster Pond on the neighbouring French island of St Martin which has, on the Dutch side of the island, Princess Juliana International Airport, which takes regular flights from the United States and Canada and Europe.

St Bart's is by no means an inexpensive island but for the beauty of its landscape, its beaches and the designer hotels, restaurants and shops it is a place that is worth visiting if only for a day, to rub shoulders with some of the glitterati who inhabit it for their own vacations.

Best Caribbean Islands - St Eustatius

Although St Eustatius is the official title of this small Dutch Caribbean island it is known affectionately by locals and visitors alike as Statia. Satia is located in the Leeward Islands of the West Indies and was once one of the most important trading islands in this part of the Caribbean.
Statia is an attractive island, with many of the locals engaged in farming the eight square miles that the island covers. An additional source of island income is, of course, from tourism. The tourist trade revolves around budget accommodation, hiking, exploring the old Dutch forts that are located on the island, and the great scuba diving, which is available in and around some of the one hundred or so offshore wrecks. Statia is also a good destination if you want to mix an activity holiday with a beach holiday. The favourite beach for holidaymakers and local alike is Oranje beach.
Statia is the home of a dormant volcano known as The Quill and the capital of the island is Oranjestad.
Dutch and English are spoken on the island but most people are able to communicate in English. The official currency is the Netherlands Antilles Gilder, although the United States Dollar is accepted in most places.
Getting around the island is easy. You can hire either a car or a bicycle or take a taxi-cab.
The best way to get to Statia is by air to its own airport, the F.D. Roosevelt Airport.
Although Statia is not one of the better known of the Caribbean islands it does have its own distinctive ambience and geography. It is one of the quieter, more friendly of the Caribbean islands but is also able to provide great eco-tourist activities together with the opportunity to chill out on the beach for a day or two if that is what you want from your vacation experience. Either way, Statia is a great Caribbean vacation destination.

Best Caribbean Islands - Saba

For someone looking for something different in a Caribbean island, Saba may well be the place for you. Saba is a small island in the Netherlands Antilles, whose area of only five square miles makes it the smallest of The Netherlands' Caribbean islands.

Saba is home to a now inactive volcano, known as Mount Scenery. The island's flora and fauna have helped it to develop into a centre for eco-tourism. Many tourists visit Saba to climb the mountain, hike and scuba dive. The quality of the coral formations in Saba is said to make it the best island in the area for diving and the island has the benefit of hyperbaric facilities in the event of a diving emergency.

Saba is an extremely pretty island, with plenty of greenery, and Dutch style villages, shops and inns. The views from the top of Mount Scenery, for all those who are able to reach the peak are tremendous on a clear day, with the islands of St Martin/St Maarten, St Bart's, St Eustatius and St Kitts and Nevis all being visible.

There are several mooring points scattered around the island, making Saba a great place to call into if you are sailing this area of the Caribbean. Saba has only one road on the island, quaintly known as The Road. The Capital of the island is The Bottom.

The official languages of the island are Dutch and English, although English is the more commonly used. Whilst the official currency is the Netherlands Antilles Gilder, the United States Dollar is accepted in most establishments.

If alternatively, you want to savour the astonishingly lush scenery and the breathtaking coral formations of the Caribbean, Saba is as good a place as many and far better than most!

Best Caribbean Islands - Anguilla

In this, one of our series of articles that takes a brief look at the magnificent islands of the Caribbean, we visit Anguilla, located in the Leeward Islands. Anguilla is one of several British West Indies islands.

Anguilla is renowned for its flat landscape and is distinctive because of its long thin topography. In fact, its name derives from the French word for eel - "Anguille."

Anguilla is an island that is dependent upon tourism for its income and is the preferred location of many of the rich and famous, due, in no small part, to the privacy offered by many of its high class hotels and villas, in addition to its beaches.

Despite its relatively small size, in comparison to some of the other Caribbean islands, Anguilla has around thirty-three separate beaches, scattered around the island.

The island is also popular with the yachting and sailing fraternity, with many yachts mooring off one of the beaches for a night or two as part of a Caribbean sailing trip. The capital of the island is The Valley.

Although the official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, the United States Dollar is universally accepted.

To get around the island you can either take a car rental or travel in one of the many taxis that are available, although most people elect to chill out on the beach for the day rather than travel around.

There are many friendly beach bars where food and, of course, drinks are served throughout the day and often well into the night!

Anguilla can be accessed by private boat, by air, into its small airport or, preferably by a short ferry ride from the neighbouring island of St Martin, which has, on the Dutch side of the island, Princess Juliana International Airport, which takes regular flights from the United States and Canada and Europe.

Although it is small, Anguilla is an island that is well worth visiting, if not for your entire vacation, then at least for a day or two if you are visiting one of the other nearby Caribbean Islands. If you do visit, you will no doubt agree that Anguilla is truly one of the gems of the Caribbean.
